LiDAR Corridor Mapping in Austin, TX
Mapping miles of highways, power lines, and pipeline right-of-ways through dense Texas terrain is notoriously difficult. Traditional photogrammetry captures the top of the tree canopy, leaving civil engineers blind to the true topography of the ground below.
Tactic Drones deploys advanced aerial LiDAR systems to solve this. By firing hundreds of thousands of laser pulses per second, our drones penetrate dense vegetation to map the bare earth beneath, providing engineering teams with pristine, survey-grade 3D data.
The LiDAR Advantage Over Photogrammetry
Standard Drone Mapping uses cameras (passive sensors) to stitch photos together. If the ground is covered by foliage, a camera simply maps the leaves. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) uses active laser pulses. A single laser pulse can hit a branch, bounce back (first return), and part of that same pulse can continue through the leaves to hit the ground (multiple returns).
This capability makes LiDAR the only acceptable technology for corridor surveys involving dense brush, forests, or complex structural overlaps. It allows us to digitally strip away the vegetation, revealing the true bare-earth Digital Elevation Model (DEM) critical for infrastructure planning.
"LiDAR doesn't just see the environment; it penetrates it. We deliver the true ground topography of your Texas corridor, regardless of how heavy the vegetation cover is."
Corridor Mapping Applications
We provide long-range, continuous mapping missions tailored to the specific needs of linear infrastructure operators and civil engineering firms in Austin and beyond.
Power Transmission Corridors
We map high-voltage lines with millimeter accuracy. LiDAR allows us to classify points to calculate precise wire sag, model transmission towers, and identify vegetation encroachment violating clearance standards.
Highway & Roadway Engineering
Planning a lane expansion requires massive topographic datasets. We fly over active highways to generate highly accurate pavement profiles and ditch cross-sections without ever closing a lane or putting surveyors in traffic.
Pipeline Right-of-Way (ROW)
For the Texas Oil & Gas sector, monitoring terrain changes along a pipeline route is essential. We create bare-earth models to track erosion, water pooling, and unauthorized excavations hidden under tree cover.
Railway Network Surveys
We capture continuous 3D point clouds of rail networks to analyze track geometry, monitor slope stability on surrounding embankments, and plan structural upgrades for bridges and crossings.
Advanced Point Cloud Classification
A raw LiDAR file contains billions of laser points and can be overwhelming to manipulate. Tactic Drones does not just hand over raw data; we process and classify it.
Our geospatial analysts filter the data to categorize individual elements—separating the ground (bare earth) from low vegetation, high canopy, buildings, and wires. We deliver classified LAS/LAZ files that can be instantly imported into AutoCAD, MicroStation, and standard GIS platforms, saving your engineering team days of manual data scrubbing.
Integration with RTK and Photogrammetry
While LiDAR provides the geometric truth, optical data provides the visual context. Our enterprise systems capture high-resolution RGB imagery simultaneously with the LiDAR scan. This allows us to colorize the 3D point cloud, resulting in a model that is both geometrically perfect and visually photorealistic.
All corridor flights are strictly governed by Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning and physical ground control, ensuring the long linear datasets align perfectly with your existing localized coordinate systems.
